Integrated workplace hardware: smart desks that set themselves up

Nearly 20,000 Wi-Fi connected sit-stand desks across Australia run on Nura Space. Here is what integrated hardware does for staff, facilities teams and the data.

In short: Integrated hardware connects the physical workplace to Nura Space, so desks, lockers and sensors respond to bookings automatically. The largest example is the Schiavello Wi-Fi switch, now fitted to nearly 20,000 sit-stand desks across Australia. It gives every desk follow-me ergonomics, light indication, Bluetooth check-in, a desk name display and remote height control.

Why hardware matters in a shared-desk workplace

Booking software tells you who intends to come in. Integrated hardware tells you what actually happens, and makes the experience at the desk better.

Without it, staff arrive at a shared desk that is set for someone else. They adjust the height by hand, hunt for a free spot and forget to check in. Facilities teams are left guessing which desks are used and which are faulty.

The Schiavello Wi-Fi switch

The Wi-Fi switch fits to a height-adjustable desk and connects it to Nura Space over the building's Wi-Fi. Each desk gains a set of capabilities:

  • Follow-me ergonomics: each person's preferred sitting and standing heights are saved in Nura Space. When they check in, the desk moves to their settings, whichever desk they book.
  • Light indication: a status light shows whether the desk is free, booked or occupied.
  • Bluetooth check-in: people check in simply by arriving at the desk with the Nura Space app. There is nothing extra to tap.
  • Desk name display: the desk shows its name or number, so people can find their booking quickly.
  • Remote height control: facilities teams can raise or lower desks from the dashboard.

Schedules and automations

Desks can follow schedules. At a set time each day, every desk on a floor can reset to a standard height.

A common routine raises used desks in the evening so cleaners can see which ones need attention, then lowers them before people arrive the next morning. Floors look tidy and consistent, and nobody has to walk the floor adjusting desks.

Remote monitoring and maintenance

Because each desk is connected, administrators can see fault codes, power cycle a desk and diagnose problems remotely. Many issues are fixed without a site visit, and the rest are found before staff report them.

A connected ecosystem

The Wi-Fi switch is one part of a wider hardware ecosystem that works with Nura Space:

  • CMS Engage, which switches workstation power on at check-in.
  • Floorsense V4 Puck and Floorsight Handset.
  • Vecos and Smartalock smart lockers.
  • Occupancy sensors that confirm real use of rooms and desks.

All of it feeds one set of workplace analytics. Bookings, check-ins and real occupancy sit side by side, so workplace teams plan with evidence.
