MELBOURNE, Australia

Nura Space, the Australian workplace technology company, is highlighting its partnership with Gray Puksand, the Australian architecture and interior design practice, which has used the platform since 2022 to run a fully shared hybrid studio in Melbourne's CBD.

When Gray Puksand rolled out Nura Space, 120 people in the Melbourne studio shared 75 desks, roughly six desks for every ten staff. Adoption reached 100% within the first week, and the practice reported that staff saved more than 15 minutes a day previously spent looking for somewhere suitable to work.

Gray Puksand has continued to use Nura Space through a move to new offices and the refurbishment of its new workplace.

A shared studio that needed visibility

Gray Puksand puts people at the centre of its practice, and its studios are built around a constant flow of ideas, mentoring and collaboration.

Moving to a shared desking model brought practical challenges. Staff had limited visibility of which workpoints were free, teams found it harder to sit together, and employees occasionally arrived at the office to find nowhere suitable to work.

The practice faced a clear choice: take on more office space so a workpoint was always available, or introduce a reliable way to manage the space it already had. Committed to flexible hybrid working, Gray Puksand chose the second option, and soon found the benefits went well beyond reserving a desk.

A two-month selection process

Gray Puksand's Digital Practice Manager, State Managing Partner and Corporate Business Manager assessed workplace platforms over two months before selecting Nura Space. Four factors decided it.

  • Customisation. Features can be switched on or off and configured to match company policy, so the practice could set the platform up around how it works. Gray Puksand has also had a say in which new features and enhancements are prioritised.
  • Local support. Australian technical support, with enterprise support during business hours, meant the team was supported through rollout and day-to-day use.
  • Cost-effectiveness. Tiered pricing let the practice start with a single studio and scale from there.
  • Ease of use. Staff can find and reserve a desk near their team from the live floor plan in a few clicks, on web or mobile, which drove the fast uptake.

The results

Time back in the day. Staff saved more than 15 minutes a day looking for a suitable workpoint, and no longer risked arriving at the studio to find nowhere to sit.

Room to grow without more space. Utilisation data showed the studio could run at one desk for every two staff at the attendance levels of the time. On that basis, the team could grow by around 30 people before it needed to add desks.

Better facilities decisions. The practice uses platform data to move resources to where they are needed and to identify where hardware is short or due for an upgrade.

A better office experience. Staff engage more with the studio because they can secure their preferred workpoint before they arrive. Attendance was hard to track before the rollout; it now shows a well-balanced pattern across the week, with no overcrowded or empty days. Teams also reserve zones so they can sit together and plan in-person catch-ups.

Growing adoption among Australia's architecture and design practices

Gray Puksand is one of a growing number of leading Australian design practices using Nura Space, alongside Carr, Architectus, Hassell and COX Architecture.

Anton Schiavello, Co-Founder and CEO of Nura Space, said design practices hold workplace technology to a particularly high standard.

“Architects and interior designers create workplaces for a living, so when a practice like Gray Puksand runs its own studio on Nura Space, that is a meaningful endorsement.”
“What stands out is how quickly the data moved the conversation on. Gray Puksand started with a practical problem, people not knowing where they could sit, and gained the evidence to plan its growth without taking on more space.”
